Every health claim on this page is sourced to published research or government health guidance. Day Zero contains all three fibers discussed below, but the finished blend has not been studied in a clinical trial. Evidence for an individual ingredient should not be read as proof that the blend produces the same result.

Psyllium, PHGG, and acacia are all soluble fibers. That label hides the useful part. Psyllium turns into a water-holding gel and has the strongest evidence for constipation. PHGG stays low in viscosity, dissolves easily, and is fermented by gut bacteria. Acacia is a highly soluble prebiotic fiber with human evidence for increasing certain bacterial groups and one recent IBS-C trial showing a modest increase in stool frequency.
None is best at everything. The right choice depends on whether you care most about stool consistency, tolerance, prebiotic fermentation, or how a powder behaves in a glass.

What is psyllium?
Psyllium comes from the husk of Plantago ovata seeds. The husk contains soluble fiber that absorbs water and forms a gel. That gel stays partly intact as it moves through the colon.
This physical behavior explains most of psyllium's value for regularity. MedlinePlus describes psyllium as a bulk-forming laxative: it absorbs liquid in the intestine, swells, and forms a bulkier stool that is easier to pass.[1]
Psyllium does more than add dry bulk. It holds water in the stool. In a small randomized study of healthy and constipated adults, psyllium increased stool water, with larger changes in the gut microbiota of participants who were constipated.[2] The study was small and lasted only seven days, so it is better evidence for mechanism than for long-term results.
Where psyllium has the strongest evidence
The clearest case is chronic constipation. A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis included 16 randomized trials and 1,251 adults. Fiber improved treatment response, stool frequency, and stool consistency. Psyllium was one of the fiber types with a significant effect.[3]
The authors found stronger results in studies using more than 10 grams per day and lasting at least four weeks. That does not turn 10 grams into a universal dose. Trials used different fibers, populations, and definitions of response, and statistical heterogeneity was high.
Psyllium also has evidence for lowering LDL cholesterol when consumed at effective doses as part of a diet low in saturated fat. FDA regulations allow an authorized health claim for certain soluble fibers from psyllium seed husk and reduced risk of coronary heart disease when products meet specific requirements.[4] That cholesterol evidence does not mean every serving size or formula qualifies for the claim.
What psyllium feels like
Psyllium thickens. If it sits in a glass, the drink becomes more viscous and can turn gummy. Some people like the sense of substance. Others dislike the texture.
It should be mixed and consumed according to the label. MedlinePlus instructs people using psyllium powder or granules to mix it with 8 ounces, or 240 milliliters, of liquid and drink it right away.[1] Taking a bulking fiber without enough fluid can increase the risk of choking or obstruction, particularly in people with swallowing problems or narrowed areas of the digestive tract.
What is PHGG?
PHGG stands for partially hydrolyzed guar gum. Ordinary guar gum is a thickening agent made from guar beans. Enzymatic hydrolysis cuts the long guar molecules into shorter chains. The result is still a soluble fiber, but it has much lower viscosity.
That difference is obvious in a drink. PHGG can dissolve without creating the heavy gel associated with intact guar gum or psyllium. Gut bacteria ferment it and produce metabolites including short-chain fatty acids.
What the PHGG research shows
Human trials suggest PHGG can affect stool form and the microbiota, but the outcome depends on the population.
A 2019 randomized, double-blind trial gave PHGG or placebo to 44 healthy adults who tended to have frequent loose stools. Three months of PHGG normalized stool form and increased Bifidobacterium, but it did not change stool frequency.[5] This was a stool-normalization study in people with diarrhea-like patterns, not a constipation trial.
A separate randomized trial enrolled 121 adults with irritable bowel syndrome. Among the 108 included in the intention-to-treat analysis, 6 grams of PHGG per day for 12 weeks improved bloating and the combined bloating-plus-gas score compared with placebo. It did not significantly improve the study's other IBS symptoms or overall quality-of-life measures.[6]
That is a useful result, but it should stay in proportion. One trial does not prove that PHGG prevents bloating in everyone. IBS is also different from ordinary meal-related fullness or constipation. Both PHGG trials cited here received industry support, another reason to avoid treating either result as final.
What PHGG feels like
PHGG is easier to hide in water, coffee, soup, or a smoothie because it has little taste and low viscosity. That can make daily use easier for people who abandon thick, gritty supplements.
The tradeoff is simple. PHGG does not create the same water-holding gel as psyllium, so it should not be expected to behave identically in hard-stool constipation.
What is acacia fiber?
Acacia fiber, also called gum arabic, is a dried plant exudate collected from certain Acacia species. It is highly soluble and has low viscosity in water. Gut bacteria ferment it, which is why acacia is commonly discussed as a prebiotic fiber.
What the acacia research shows
A controlled human feeding study gave healthy volunteers 5, 10, 20, or 40 grams of gum arabic daily for four weeks. The researchers measured selected bacterial groups in stool. Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli increased compared with the water control, with the strongest response around 10 grams per day in that study.[7]
Several caveats matter. The trial was short, measured bacterial counts rather than a clinical endpoint such as constipation relief, and studied a specific gum arabic preparation. A change in selected bacteria is not the same as a proven improvement in symptoms or health.
A 2024 double-blind trial randomized 180 adults with constipation-predominant IBS to acacia, a probiotic, or placebo for four weeks. The acacia group increased from 5 to 10 grams per day. Stool frequency rose by an average of 1.3 stools per week from baseline, compared with 0.4 for placebo. Acacia did not significantly outperform placebo for stool consistency, stool mass, quality of life, abdominal pain, bloating, or flatulence.[8] The study involved industry contributions and included an ingredient-company employee among the authors.
The evidence supports calling acacia a fermentable prebiotic fiber with emerging IBS-C data. One short trial does not establish it as a reliable laxative for general constipation.
What acacia feels like
Acacia usually dissolves without much thickening. It tends to be easier to add to a beverage than psyllium. Fermentation may create gas, especially when someone goes from very little fiber to a large dose.
Psyllium vs PHGG for constipation
Psyllium has the stronger evidence for chronic constipation. Its gel holds water in stool, and it was one of the fibers with a significant effect in the 2022 meta-analysis.[3]
PHGG may support bowel regularity and stool form, particularly when tolerance is the priority. Its low viscosity makes it easier to consume. The direct constipation evidence is less extensive, and its mechanism leans more heavily on fermentation.
If hard, dry stool is the main issue, psyllium's water-holding behavior is relevant. If a thick texture makes you stop using fiber, PHGG may be easier to keep in the routine. Persistent constipation deserves a clinician's input rather than endless dose adjustments.

Psyllium vs acacia fiber
Psyllium is more viscous and less fermentable. Acacia is less viscous and more fermentable.
That gives them different strengths:
- Psyllium has better evidence for increasing stool water and improving constipation.
- Acacia has clearer evidence for a prebiotic effect on selected gut bacteria.
- Psyllium changes drink texture much more.
- Acacia may cause gas when introduced quickly because bacteria ferment it.
A microbiome change should not be treated as automatically better. The gut microbiome is an ecosystem, and the clinical meaning of changing one bacterial group depends on the person and the outcome measured.
PHGG vs acacia fiber
PHGG and acacia have more in common with each other than either has with psyllium. Both dissolve with low viscosity and are fermented by gut bacteria. Both are commonly used to increase fiber without turning a drink into gel.
Their human studies are not interchangeable. PHGG has randomized trials on stool form and IBS bloating. Acacia has human evidence for prebiotic bacterial changes and smaller signals on self-reported bowel symptoms. There is little high-quality head-to-head research that can declare one universally superior.
Which fiber is least likely to cause bloating?
No fiber is guaranteed to be bloat-free. Gas depends on dose, speed of increase, baseline diet, bowel transit, and how readily bacteria ferment the fiber.
Psyllium is relatively resistant to fermentation, which can limit gas production compared with highly fermentable fibers. Its thickness and bulking effect can still create fullness.
PHGG was well tolerated in the 2016 IBS trial and improved bloating scores at 6 grams per day.[6] That does not mean every person with bloating should take PHGG. Acacia is also often tolerated at modest doses, but larger amounts give bacteria more substrate to ferment.
The lowest-risk approach is boring but effective: increase slowly. Hold a smaller amount for several days, drink adequate fluid, and do not add several new fiber products at once. Our guide to increasing fiber without gas or bloating gives a practical schedule.
Can you combine psyllium, PHGG, and acacia?
Yes, these fibers can appear in the same formula. Combining them can provide gel formation, low-viscosity soluble fiber, and fermentable prebiotic fiber in one serving.
A blend also complicates the evidence. A study on psyllium alone cannot prove the effect of a three-fiber formula. The ratio, total dose, flavor system, serving instructions, and adherence all matter.
Day Zero Daily Fiber combines psyllium husk, PHGG, and acacia fiber and provides 6 grams of fiber per serving. The formula is designed around complementary physical properties. It has not been tested as a finished blend in a clinical trial, so product claims should remain limited to composition, quality, and the evidence attached to the individual ingredients.
Safety and medication timing
Fiber supplements are not appropriate for everyone.
Talk with a clinician before using a bulking fiber if you have difficulty swallowing, a known bowel narrowing, severe abdominal pain, unexplained bleeding, or a history of intestinal obstruction. Get medical help for constipation accompanied by vomiting, inability to pass gas, fever, blood in the stool, or constant abdominal pain.[9]
Psyllium and other fibers may affect how some oral medicines are absorbed. MedlinePlus advises patients to review their medicines and supplements with a doctor or pharmacist before taking psyllium.[1] There is no universal spacing rule for every drug. Ask a pharmacist about the specific medicines you use.
People with kidney disease, heart failure, or another condition requiring fluid restriction should not force extra water without medical guidance.
Frequently asked questions
Is PHGG the same as guar gum?
PHGG starts as guar gum, but hydrolysis breaks it into shorter chains and dramatically reduces its viscosity. It does not thicken water the way ordinary guar gum does.
Is acacia fiber the same as inulin?
No. Both are fermentable prebiotic fibers, but they come from different plants and have different chemical structures. Results from an inulin study cannot be assigned to acacia.
Which fiber is best for regularity?
Psyllium has the strongest direct evidence for chronic constipation. PHGG and acacia may support stool form and the microbiome, but their constipation evidence is less extensive.
Can I take all three fibers every day?
A commercial blend may contain all three. Follow its label and start gradually if your current fiber intake is low. Ask a clinician if you have a digestive disorder, take closely monitored medicine, or have symptoms beyond ordinary irregularity.
How much fiber do adults need?

The useful way to think about the three
Psyllium is the water-holding gel. PHGG is the low-viscosity, fermentable fiber with useful tolerance data. Acacia is a fermentable prebiotic with modest human evidence for selected microbiome changes.
A good fiber choice is one that matches the job and fits your routine. Ingredient names matter, but dose, fluid, and consistency of use matter too.
